Background of the Study
Freight transport efficiency is critical for the smooth operation of international and domestic trade, as it directly influences the cost, speed, and reliability of cargo movements. In Nigeria, where trade performance is a vital component of economic growth, efficient freight transport systems can substantially reduce logistics costs and improve market access (Adeyemi, 2023). Recent investments in upgrading road, rail, and port facilities aim to streamline freight operations, reduce transit delays, and enhance competitiveness in regional and global markets (Olusola, 2024). Efficient freight movement not only supports the timely delivery of goods but also encourages investment in manufacturing and export-oriented industries, which are essential for sustainable economic development.

Empirical studies indicate that regions with modernized freight networks experience lower transportation costs and higher trade volumes, thereby contributing to increased export performance (Ibrahim, 2025). The efficiency of freight transport influences supply chain reliability, which in turn affects the overall productivity of businesses and the competitiveness of Nigerian products in the international arena. However, despite policy initiatives and infrastructural developments, many freight corridors continue to suffer from congestion, regulatory bottlenecks, and suboptimal maintenance practices. These inefficiencies lead to increased turnaround times, higher fuel consumption, and elevated operational costs that ultimately erode trade margins (Chinwe, 2023).

This study explores the nexus between freight transport efficiency and trade performance in Nigeria by analyzing the extent to which improvements in freight logistics can translate into enhanced export competitiveness and domestic market integration. By evaluating performance metrics such as cargo throughput, transit time, and cost efficiency, the research aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of how freight transport infrastructure and operations impact trade outcomes. This investigation is particularly pertinent as Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and reduce dependency on oil revenues, making the modernization of freight transport a strategic priority for long-term economic resilience.

Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in transport infrastructure, the efficiency of freight operations in Nigeria remains below international standards. Persistent challenges—such as inadequate maintenance, congestion at key logistics hubs, and inconsistent regulatory frameworks—continue to impede the smooth movement of goods, leading to increased transportation costs and delays (Uche, 2023). These inefficiencies contribute to a competitive disadvantage for Nigerian exporters and limit the growth potential of the domestic market. In many cases, the inability to move freight efficiently undermines the reliability of supply chains, resulting in missed business opportunities and reduced investor confidence (Afolabi, 2024).

Moreover, the lack of integrated planning across different modes of transport exacerbates these issues. The fragmentation between road, rail, and maritime operations leads to duplication of efforts and creates gaps in the logistics chain, thereby increasing the risk of delays and operational disruptions. Such systemic challenges not only raise the cost of doing business but also hinder the country’s ability to meet the growing demands of international trade (Ibrahim, 2025). Additionally, the limited availability of real-time data on freight movement hampers effective decision-making and the implementation of responsive policy measures.

This study, therefore, aims to identify the key factors that detract from freight transport efficiency and assess their direct impact on trade performance in Nigeria. It seeks to explore whether targeted interventions—such as improved regulatory coordination, enhanced maintenance regimes, and better integration of multimodal transport systems—can reduce logistics costs and boost trade competitiveness.

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the relationship between freight transport efficiency and trade performance in Nigeria.
  • To identify key operational and regulatory barriers affecting freight efficiency.
  • To propose strategic policy recommendations to enhance freight logistics and trade outcomes.

Research Questions

  • How does freight transport efficiency affect trade performance in Nigeria?
  • What are the primary barriers hindering efficient freight operations?
  • Which policy interventions can improve freight logistics and boost trade performance?

Research Hypotheses

  • Freight transport efficiency positively correlates with improved trade performance.
  • Operational and regulatory inefficiencies significantly hinder freight efficiency.
  • Strategic policy reforms can enhance freight logistics, leading to better trade outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on major freight corridors and logistics hubs in Nigeria. It examines quantitative indicators such as transit times, costs, and cargo volumes, as well as qualitative insights from industry stakeholders. Limitations include data variability, potential regional disparities, and difficulties in isolating freight-specific effects from other economic factors.

Definitions of Terms
Freight Transport Efficiency: The effectiveness and reliability of cargo movement across transportation networks.
Trade Performance: The overall success of a country’s export and import activities measured by volume, cost, and market access.
Logistics Hub: A central location where goods are transferred, stored, and distributed.
